A York Regional Police officer shot a dog to death in Newmarket on Thursday when it turned on her after attacking three other people, including a 75-year-old woman.

The unleashed dog, a two-year-old Border Collie-Australian Shepherd mix, also attacked a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl in the middle of the afternoon in a residential neighbourhood.

When the police officer approached the dog, it bit her on the back, knee and arm.

The officer then shot the dog, a female named Angel, fatally injuring it. The owner was on scene but was not one of those attacked.

Newmarket officials confirm the dog did have a history of attacks.

Multiple bites were reported, dating back to May 2004. In June 2005, a Newmarket judge ordered Angel to be muzzled and kept on a short lease. The owner was told any more serious infractions could result in the dog being euthanized.

The elderly victim was taken to hospital where she received numerous stitches. The two teenagers were treated for minor injuries.

Newmarket's Animal Control Services is investigating the attack, and will conduct tests to see if the dog had any medical problems.
